A Message to all doujin shmup producers......

E3 was very disappointing shmup-wise, and it looks like the direction that console gaming is heading will be right on course to what everyone was predicting and shmup fans were dreading: a rash of next-gen rehashed sequels, online MMORPG's, and Madden 0x's till the EA goose stops laying golden eggs. This isn't such a horrible trend, but lets face it, our beloved genre seems to have been left behind (at least in these, the early stages of the "next gen" consoles). The current state of the industry forces me to turn my eyes Eastward, towards the land of Japan (*and elsewhere, but mainly the Far East), to shout a message to all the designers, coders, programmers, art directors, and players of doujin shmups:

THANK YOU!!!!!!

Seriously, has anyone taken the time to share this simple sentiment with the hundreds of people who put work into the doujin scene, with little to no reward? Unless you are a big name, with a distribution system for your games (such as Zun), chances are you don't see much profit from your labor of love. And a good number of doujin shmups we've come across are even freeware (Kenta Cho), which means the only reward you get for your efforts is the satisfaction of hearing from fans who enjoy your dedication. The doujin gamemakers aren't worried about sales figures, market demograhics, or crafting a game around a target audience, they only want to express their love of the genre in their programming, and that purity of gaming REALLY SHOWS. Even though I doubt any of the big names of doujindom will read this, I just want you to know that people halfway across the globe still play and enjoy your games. Thank you for providing us with hours of entertainment, and for carrying the torch of the shmup genre through the next wave of gaming, wherever that may lead us.

I second that Thank You to them, and especially to Kenta Cho. Torus Trooper and Mu-cade are especially nice.

It's sad that top-billed games are devolving into movies with buttons, and their consoles into slightly-controllable-movie players. More shooters, please!

Their is still room for possibility that Gradius VI will emerge eventually for the next gen. Not to mention an arcade port of Shikigami No Shiro III. At least Senko No Ronde is coming out for XBOX360.

Wow! Beautiful World looks awesome! I can't wait to check it out. Thanks! :)X

For my own part, I've made the Flash "suicide shmup" Pretty Pretty Bang Bang (http://www.studiohunty.com/bang/), and promise more shmups eventually, perhaps once I finish my current project. :)X

Wow, lots of interest in this posting! It needed to be said, I'm glad people agree.....

True, some shmups may show up, but I'm not holding my breath.....Gradius 6 would be the icing on the cake for me.

@ Tenga: Beautiful World is impressive! I'm glad that you visit my page, and look forward to the finished version.

@Hunty: PPBB was also fun for me. I haven't played Every Extend yet (won't run on my PC) but if it's like Bang Bang I'll have to check it out.

@ 2ch: Hello! I have your site in my list that I check almost daily. Thanks for stopping by, and glad to see some friends from Japan here!

@ final poster: Thanks for alerting Kenta Cho....I hope all the doujin gamemakers can see this and know that they are appreciated.

Thanks for saying thanks! And add my thanks to the creators too. I'm an aspiring indie developer myself (I have the ability, just not the time.. maybe one day I'll get further than this: http://coolpowers.googlepages.com/ebw.png ) and I know how much effort is involved in even the simplest games.

I'm probably not as hardcore a shmup fan as most of this site's visitors, but I'm old enough to have grown up with simpler arcade games and now I find myself returning to "pure gameplay" titles more and more, because I just don't have time to play through a 50 hour RPG, or even a 12 hour action title. With shmups I can sit down and be playing immediately, then be finished before the baby wakes up or our son wants to do something else.

I prefer console gaming, and I'm hopeful that more opportunities will be given to indie developers.
